He gave no more details of the threat….His warning came less than 24 hours after peers forced the Government to abandon plans to extend maximum pre-charge detention for terror suspects to 42 days.”
Jacqui Smith confirms, after losing 42 day terror detention law issue, that the terror threat is at the “severe end of severe”.
Now that 42 days is a goner… perhaps we ought to look more closely at the need to detain people for 28 days without trial. If there is a terror atrocity and our elected representatives need to act quickly - then fair enough - but do we need a 28 day detention without trial law on the books of our once libertarian isle?

My word, they are intent on keeping up the scaremongering, the politics of fear. The Sky will fall in if we don't get more terror legislation to use on you lot.
Trouble is, the methods have all been used before, we have heard them cry wolf so many times it wears very very thin. Our fathers and Grandfathers heard the same thing, but from a very different source.
His primary rules were: never allow the public to cool off; never admit a fault or wrong; never concede that there may be some good in your enemy; never leave room for alternatives; never accept blame; concentrate on one enemy at a time and blame him for everything that goes wrong; people will believe a big lie sooner than a little one; and if you repeat it frequently enough people will sooner or later believe it.
Is this a fair assessment of Tony Blair, or more recently Gordon Brown, or even just the 11 years of this NuLab government?. It was in fact the American Office of Strategic Services in describing Hitler's psychological profile in 1943, but how true it rings for our present leaders.
Whilst this government uses the politics of fear, whilst we allow them to use the politics of fear, they are doing more harm to the people of the UK than real terrorists ever could.
Today, it is those in government who create the terror for political gain, it is they who are the real terrorists.
