The Labour Party has repeatedly failed to declare donations totalling more than £2.8 million to electoral regulators within the legal time limit, it has emerged.

Political parties must inform the Electoral Commission within 30 days of receiving donations and the watchdog has warned parties that failing to meet the deadline is "unacceptable".

An analysis of Labour returns conducted by the Press Association revealed that the party has missed the deadline repeatedly since 2001.

Peter Hain, who resigned from the Cabinet on Thursday after failing to declare donations on time, is now the subject of a police investigation.
