The Department for Transport has announced funding for local authorities to experiment with road pricing – despite major opposition to the scheme

From 2008, £200m per year will be made available over seven years out of the Transport Innovation Fund (TIF) to aid local authorities that want to bring forward local road pricing schemes, alongside major investment in public transport.

The Department for Transport (DfT) said on 24 February 2007 that it has awarded more than £14m to support 10 areas across England developing proposals for the TIF.
 

It has already started the roll out. If you travel by motorway regularly you will have seen over the past 2 years roadside contractors laying purple cable, and the proliferation of the blue post camera's on rural roads.

The DfT said the first studies are to take place in

  • the greater Bristol area, covering the former Avon unitary authorities,
  • Cambridgeshire for the Cambridge area,
  • Durham,
  • Greater Manchester,
  • Shropshire for Shrewsbury,
  • Tyne and Wear,
  • the West Midlands area,
  • Reading,
  • Norfolk (for the Norwich area)
  • and the cities of Nottingham,
  • Leicester
  • Derby
  • and the surrounding counties.

Basically, most of England, and all of the major motorway junctions and trunk routes.

Pilot my arse, this is phase 1 of a national roll out. 

Work out a trip anywhere to anywhere in the UK and see how many areas you will have to pass through.
