Statement on the Charity Commission and the Smith Institute

The Charity Commission for England
and Wales has
opened a formal inquiry into the charity The Smith Institute today.

The decision to open an inquiry was taken in the light of new information we
have received which raises concerns about some of the charity’s work.

The scope of the inquiry is to determine whether The Smith Institute is both
established and operating as a charity advancing the education of the public in
the field of study and research into the economy of the United
Kingdom.

The Commission has informed the charity of this decision. The Commission has
been and continues to engage with the charity in relation to the issues raised.

Without his dogged background work and the publicity on his and other blog
sites this Charity Commission investigation would not have taken off.

the beginning was THE PLAN.

 

And
then came THE ASSUMPTIONS.

 

And
THE ASSUMPTIONS were without form.

 

And
THE PLAN
was without substance.

 

And
darkness was upon the face of the policy planners.

 

And
they spoke among themselves, saying verily:

“THE PLAN is a crock of shit and it
stinks.”

 

And
the policy planners went unto their Supervisors and said:

“THE PLAN is a pail of dung, and none
may abide the odor thereof.”

 

And
the Supervisors went unto their Managers, saying:

“THE PLAN is a container of excrement
and it is very strong such

that none may abide by
it.”

 

And
the Managers went unto their Committees, saying:

“THE PLAN is a vessel of fertilizer
and none may abide its strength.”

 

And
the Committee members spoke amongst themselves, saying one to another:

“THE PLAN contains that which aids
plant growth and it is very strong.”

 

And
the Committee Members then went unto the Special Advisors, saying unto them:

“THE PLAN promotes growth and it is
very powerful.”

 

And
the Special Advisors
went unto the Minister, saying unto him:

“THE PLAN will actively promote the
growth and vigor of the government with powerful effects.”

 

And
the Minister looked upon THE PLAN
and saw that it was good.

 

And
THE PLAN
became Policy
