According to Hansard, a question was raised in the House yesterday by Dai Davies (Blaenau Gwent, Independent) that was either a waste of time, or, has the makings of a story.

The Question:

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what request has been received from the Israeli Government for permission for Israeli military aircraft (a) to enter airspace over and (b) to land at Gibraltar.

The Response:

Kim Howells (Minister of State (Middle East), Foreign & Commonwealth Office)

The Government have not received any requests from the Israeli military to enter airspace over and land at Gibraltar.

Would it be the responsibility of the FO to answer such a question, to which a truthful answer was probably given, or if the aircraft in question was to land at the RAF station in Gibraltar would it have been better to ask the Minister of Defence, in which case a completely different answer may or may not have emerged.

So what does Dai Davies know that the rest of don’t?

If we look back a week and see all the news headlines with regard to Israel getting ready to attack Iran, in order to obtain ordnance in secret, the RAF base in Gibraltar would seem a perfect place to pick up a few B61-11s dropped off by a passing American auxillary ship.

Does Dai Davis know something?  Or was he just raising a question in the House to get his average for the year up.
